Olakino-Lokahi-Mauli
The Herban Hapa is an Afro-Indigenous Native Hawaiian–owned and operated coffee and tea farm, education platform, and community gathering initiative rooted in Indigenous knowledge, land stewardship, and collective healing. We are a value-added farm-to-table enterprise grounded in mauli (life force), ʻōlākino (holistic wellness), and lōkahi (unity, balance, harmony).
We are building more than a business — we are building a cultural economy, an education system, and a community space. Our work exists at the intersection of agriculture, wellness, culture, and sovereignty, creating pathways for Indigenous women to thrive through land-based entrepreneurship and community leadership.
tea that honors tradition and land
The Herban Hapa was born in a raspberry field in Santa Cruz, California.
Founders Rachael Kamalei Malapit and Mikomi Ka’elani Yoshikawa met while participating in an agricultural program where they were the only women of color — and the only participants working in exchange for access. While laboring in the fields together, they realized they shared the same ancestry, the same dreams, and the same kuleana to their communities. Two strangers from tiny islands in the Pacific, meeting at the right place and the right time — even sharing the same birthday, down to the same hour.
That meeting changed everything.
Not because of the program — but because of their alignment, shared vision, and commitment to ensuring that no Indigenous woman has to be exploited to gain knowledge that should serve the social, economic, and emotional well-being of her people.
From that moment, The Herban Hapa was formed.
Rachael and Miko went back to their homes in Kona, Hawai’i island and Hana, Maui to begin putting together all they have learned. This is the manifestation of that knowledge.
